Wicklow Schools Senior Boys Football
Wicklow Schools Senior Boys Football team (Wicklow Schools) compete in the Top Oil, Bro Bosco, Leinster “A” colleges championship. This is the premier championship for Post Primary schools in Leinster and Wicklow Schools is a combined team of all the schools in Co. Wicklow. The old Vocational Schools competition is no longer running due to the abolition of the VEC schools system. Therefore, Wicklow Schools, Louth Schools, Drogheda Schools, Dundalk Schools, Offaly Schools and Wexford Schools enter teams in the Top Oil Bro Bosco Cup.
Wicklow Schools are now considered part of the Wicklow GAA Garden county academy (GCA) pathway, as it is an U19 competition it gives great opportunity for players to progress from Minor football, through the Wicklow Schools team and finish at U20 football level on the pathway to Senior inter county Football.
Wicklow Schools management are always trying to raise the profile of this competition and standard of football, which is on par with the higher profile competition rival in the code of Rugby , the much lauded Leinster Senior Cup.
“we see the players as student players & scholars of the game”
Wicklow Schools management team prepare and manage the players workloads with their individual school football teams, club teams and most importantly their studies, as we see the players as student players & scholars of the game. Our ambition year on year is to make the quarterfinal/Semifinal stage of this competition, which shows consistency and allows players to develop on a platform of high level “A” Leinster competition. However, more importantly we seek to develop the players football skills/conditioning/knowledge through application and feedback/evaluation. The players mature, progress and become more rounded individuals through their commitment, hard work and application. Wicklow schools and Wicklow GAA benefit from these committed players as they progress through the GCA pathway.
“6 bursaries worth €1000 each have been awarded to 6 individual players”
Wicklow Schools encourage their players to excel in their leaving certificate and provide a safe secure learning environment to develop their footballing skills. We have developed the Wicklow Schools Senior Boys Football 3rd Level Bursary programme, where to date 6 bursaries worth €1000 each have been awarded to 6 individual players who have secured a place in 3rd level colleges and applied for their Bursary through an application process. We want to encourage players to further their education and have the ambition to play in the Sigerson cup competition.
